The illumination of the Lactatio is from one of the Douce manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The details are given on the Wikipedia entry for “St Bernard of Clairvaux” which has the same image. It has been suggested that the image of the Virgin Mary giving milk to Bernard represents him as a foster-brother to Jesus. I suspect that Dante’s expressions (sic) in Paradiso XXXIII of being able to speak only like a babe with a milky tongue also owe something to St Bernard’s lactatio vision.
Thank you, Greg, for your comment. The source of the image will be added to our article.
