Dear New World Encyclopedia:
Regarding Bette Davis and the Role of Scarlett O Hara in Gone With the Wind:
According to Bette Davis’ Biography, David O Selznick did not think Errol Flynn was right for the Butler part and neither did Bette Davis. And, the deal was that they were to accept Davis and Flynn together or Davis would not be released from Warners to play the role of Scarlett.
Bette Davis always told things as they were, and didn’t stretch the truth, even if the result meant personal or financial loss.
Please reconsider adjusting your write-up which states that Selznick didn’t think she was right for the part. The year before, she played basically the same part, very convincingly, and won an accademy award for it. As one of the greatest actresses of all time, she was the only ‘Well Known’ actress who could have played this part with success.
