Great article, accessible to high school students of literature. Here’s a suggested addition:
Another strong example of the Vonnegut hero is from ‘Metropolis’ by Fritz Lang, 1927. Heir to the Metropolis empire, Freder has grown up in the upper world of Metropolis and is unaware of the half of society trapped below the surface, enslaved to his father, the tyrannical Fredersen. When he discovers the reality of their existence – to labour to keep the machine running which affords the upper world their luxury and leisure, he becomes ‘the mediator’ and sets about restoring his ‘brothers’ to a more fulfilling existence.
