According to http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Joseph_Addison#Misattributed, the quote “The great essentials for happiness in this life are something to do, something to love and something to hope for.” is misattributed, and is actually due to George Washington Burnap.
Thank you, Dirk, for your comment. It does appear that the quote has been wrongly attributed to Joseph Addison, having been written by George Washington Burnap in ”The Sphere and Duties of Woman: A Course of Lectures”. The article is being corrected. Thank you again for pointing out that mistake.
