I lived in Saudi 1977-82. I have one of the “Exit Visas” tapes–almost everyone (Western) at the U. of Petroleum did. As far as I know, they were all guys, Brits with one American. The story is that they were chummy with a high-level Saudi, and once when he was visiting one of them, they played a tape for him. He was not amused, jail followed. Tapes were made 1978 or before. Supposedly they got out of jail when QE II paid a visit a few years later. Who knows.
I should add some of the lyrics: “Hi ho, hi hee, I am a Yemeni…I dig in the dirt and wear a little skirt, hi ho hi ho hi hee” A lot more about the royal family, Islam, Muhammad, etc. Amusing, but what were they thinking? They should have waited until they were safely out of the country! Where are they now?
Thank you for the additional information.
Gandhi’s famous quote is given in the article, but I cannot track down where/when he actually said “eye for an eye makes the whole world [half?] blind.” It seems that this quote is always given without attribution. Anyone have the source?
