Your Comment :At Johns Hopkins, Ely tried to introduce the German historical method into teaching economics, a move which resulted in serious conflict with a more conservative wing, led by Simon Newcomb, who finally managed to get Ely dismissed from Johns Hopkins in 1892.

This comment is at odds with the comprehensive Bio on Ely done by Benjamin Rader. He says that Ely was an Empire builder and had disagreement with
H.B Adams . The reason for his departure was turf warfare and money. Ely was subordinate to Adams in the History Department. Ely resigned as a ploy to get more Money as he had an offer from University of Chicago. It was NOT Simon Newcomb that caused him to leaver as you imply. They did have squabbles earlier but this was not the reason for his departure.

Thank you for your comment.
It does appear that it was not Simon Newcomb who cause Ely to leave Johns Hopkins.
