The photo of Union troops at Petersburg used in your siege article is misplaced. A.J. Russell’s photograph (often misidentified) depicts the New Jersey Brigade, First Division VI Corps Army of the Potomac at Second Fredricksburg during the Chancellorsville Campaign, May 3, 1863. Union officers stand on the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Rail Road embankment, looking at Marye Heights (Salem Heights) defended by Jubal Early’s Division, Army of Nothern Virginia. The same misidentified photo appears in numerous Petersburg siege articles and books. The photo was misidentified decades ago and the misrepresentation continues to perpetuate.
